These practices are managed locally and supported by a central office team, removing the administrative burden from the dental team while maintaining continuity in patient care. To ensure continuity of patient care, we only buy practices where the Principal is looking to continue to provide dental care.
We don’t have a rigid acquisition structure because each acquisition is as individual as the practice. We tailor an agreement based on how much or little involvement you want in the future and the requirements of the practice. Then, through investing in the team, we help optimise the performance of the practice, and grow the goodwill value.

Gary was instrumental in successfully integrating our dental practice, Apollonia House in Saddleworth, into the Portman Healthcare family. I don’t think it would have happened without his enthusiasm, approachability and common sense.
Contract negotiations are always difficult, but whenever the solicitors appeared to reach an impasse Gary was always ready to step in and bang heads together and keep things moving forward.
Portman Healthcare is a great company to belong to, but it has only become such a company through the efforts of its directors and team, all of whom seem to have the same attributes as Gary of being efficient, approachable and good company, from the CEO down.

I have enjoyed my clinical dentistry more than ever since selling my practice to Portman Healthcare two years ago. The whole burden of compliance, employment and management have been lifted from my shoulders leaving me free to enjoy treating patients which is what I enjoy the best.
Portman are an excellent company and give me full clinical freedom, I enjoy meeting other dentists in the Portman group when we exchange ideas and experiences. It is also great to enjoy dentistry without any financial worries.

I sold my practice six months ago to a small Corporate – Portman Healthcare.
The sale took approximately five months. Due diligence was tough- but I see why. In the same circumstances I would have done the same. If you are buying you need to see that the headlines match the details.
The new owners had wished that I stay on for the next four years and I’m very happy to do so. (They were only interested if I did stay on). I’m still enjoying dentistry- especially with the new technologies available. Some very minor niggles in our relationship- all sorted out as quickly as possible – but overall this exit strategy for me has been smoother than I expected. (I can’t say all Corporates would be the same).
I look forward to each day at work (As I had done before the sale) but with less day to day stress. .
All I would say is – if you plan to continue working with the new owners do YOUR due diligence too. And find someone with the same ethos as you have.
My solicitor was Russell Abrahams. And the advice and service was excellent. Not cheap – but you get what you pay for.
The Curtain has now drawn on my dental career and i must thank you so much for the Portman generosity in providing the retirement party and the extremely generous hamper. I was given a lovely send off by the practice and it was wonderful to see that Sue was there to represent Portman.I am fortunate to have been in practice for 40 years and can honestly say that I was as enthusiastic at the end as I was at the beginning. I did wonder whether I was making the right decision in retiring now, but the physical aches and pains won the day.
I have been delighted with the way that Portman have managed the practice and grown the provision of specialist services. I feel that what was a good product is now even better, and the practice certainly does have a good reputation on the Isle of Wight. The challenge now is to keep going, and I am sure that the appointment of Michael Norman to replace me will prove to be successful.

What is the reality of the Portman model?
We’ve found in our practices that this innovative approach to acquisitions has been a really effective way of allowing principals to:
- Secure their exit route and percentage of goodwill while continuing to benefit from the growth of the practice.
- Continue to have input into their practice but with less responsibility and financial risk (and with the support of a professional management team).
- Reduce the administrative burden of staff and accounting so the principals not only have more time outside of dentistry but also more time for the actual dentistry with the result that the practice grows significantly.
The Portman family is growing through selectively acquiring practices where the dentists and the practice philosophy compliments our vision and values.
