Other dental treatments

At Portman we can help with a whole host of concerns, from sleep apnoea to anti-ageing treatments.

Mouthguards

When playing sports such as hockey, rugby, football or cricket, you want to make sure that your smile stays intact. Dental injuries are common during sports activities. Anything from a chipped tooth to a jaw injury is possible without the right protection.

Common dental injuries from contact sports include fractures, tooth intrusion, extrusion and avulsion, and even jaw dislocation. Mouthguards are commonly used by athletes and sports players to protect their teeth and gums. They are also used in cases of teeth grinding and for some whitening treatments.

Mouthguards are specially made to fit exactly to your jaw, so that they not only provide the shock-resistant protection that your teeth and jaw need, but stay in place comfortably. Meaning that if you score that winning point, you’ll be able to show off your whole smile as you grin from ear to ear.

TMD

Around 30 percent of adults will experience TMD at some point their lives.

TMD stands for temporomandibular disorder, or you may hear it called TMJ dysfunction – referring to the temporomandibular joint. This is a sliding joint that connects your top and lower jaw on either side, allowing you to open your mouth, to chew, to talk and to yawn. If you have something wrong with this particular part of your jaw, you may feel an uncomfortable pain or ache.

Usually, this is nothing to worry about and any irritation will very often go away on its own. However, if you are experiencing ongoing pain, make an appointment to see your dentist. Our experts are trained to help minimise your discomfort and set you on the road to a pain-free jaw.

Anti-snoring

Did you know that twice as many men as women snore? Not only that, but nearly half of the UK’s adult population will snore in their sleep tonight.

For some it can have a huge impact on daily life. In the short-term it can lead to stress and excessive tiredness, while the effects on your heart and air passages can prove more dangerous in the long-term.

Even if it is not currently affecting you, chances are it’s affecting your partner. If someone has informed you that you snore, it’s best to get checked out, and start making a few changes.

Facial aesthetics

Factors such as sun, smoking, diet and age all contribute to the appearance of your skin and while we cannot halt the natural ageing process, we can offer a range of non-surgical treatments to keep your skin healthy, bright and looking as youthful as possible.

Dentists are experts in facial anatomy and are perfectly placed to help you with skin issues and anti-ageing treatments. Portman dentists are passionate about restoring confidence in their patients, and have the skills to deliver cosmetic treatments safely and effectively. Our practices offer a wide range of facial aesthetic treatments, including dermal fillers, anti-wrinkle injections, facial peels, and skin needling.

Portman practices provide complete skin analysis and expert advice in a calm, safe environment.

    Anti snoring

    What is snoring?

Snoring is caused by the vibration of soft tissues in the throat and behind the tongue. Studies indicate that at least 30 percent of adults snore. Snoring can be a major factor in sleep disturbance and result in stress, leading to lack of energy, poor concentration, mood swings and irritability. In the long term, snoring can also lead to high blood pressure and heart problems.

    What is sleep apnoea?

With Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA), an increase in weight or a reduction in muscle tone can trigger the change from a partially blocked airway (snoring) to a fully blocked airway, causing sufferers to stop breathing for periods of time while sleeping. Many people with OSA are completely unaware of the disorder, and remain undiagnosed for several years. OSA has been linked to an increased risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease.
